About Koji Press
Koji Press is an independent Risograph printing studio founded in Sheffield in 2024. We're a small, passionate team dedicated to bringing vibrant, tactile, and affordable printing to artists, designers, and anyone who loves ink on paper.
What We Do
We specialise in Risograph printing—a unique and sustainable method that sits somewhere between screen printing and photocopying. The process is known for its bold colours, soft textures, and delightful quirks. No two prints are ever exactly the same, and that's exactly how we like it.
At Koji Press, we work with creatives of all kinds—whether you’re printing zines, posters, prints, comics, or experimental art pieces. Our goal is to support independent voices and help bring your work to life with colour, character, and soul.
What Is Risograph?
A Risograph is a Japanese stencil duplicator that uses soy-based inks and rice paper masters. Think of it like a cross between a screen printer and a photocopier—fast and cost-effective, yet rich with analogue charm.
Each colour is printed one layer at a time, using its own drum. This means layering colours requires precision and a bit of planning—but it also opens up endless creative possibilities. You can achieve striking overlays, unusual textures, and vibrant halftones that are hard to replicate digitally.
Riso is environmentally friendly, too. The machines use minimal energy and produce very little waste, and the inks are non-toxic and plant-based.
Why 'Koji'?
We named ourselves after koji, the Japanese fermentation starter used to make sake, miso, and soy sauce. Like Risograph printing, koji works quietly in the background to transform raw materials into something more complex and alive. It's a subtle nod to process, patience, and craft.
